Renosterveld

Renosterbusch

Renosterveld is a type of vegetation in the Cape in South Africa and belongs to the fynbos . The Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest and most species-rich in the world, with a high proportion of endemic species.

The name of the Renosterveld comes from the rhino bush Elytropappus rhinocerotis ( Afrikaans Renosterbos ). Most of this type of vegetation has been destroyed or transformed by agriculture and urbanization. Less than 5% of the original vegetation has been preserved. These remaining vegetation areas are usually smaller than 100 hectares and isolated from one another. The largest contiguous Renosterveld area is the nature reserve Elandsberg Contract Nature Reserve in the municipality of Drakenstein .

A distinction is made between the following types of Renosterveld:

  • West Coast Renosterveld; Mediterranean climate, winter rain area with 300 - 600 mm annual rainfall
  • Central Mountain Renosterveld
  • Escarpment Mountain Renosterveld
  • Northwestern Mountain Renosterveld
