South African National Biodiversity Institute
The South African National Biodiversity Institute ( SANBI , German: " South African National Institute for Biodiversity") serves the goals and state principles of sustainable development in South Africa , the provision of information, research and development in the field of biodiversity and the management of the resources involved. The institute was founded on September 1, 2004 on the basis of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act ( Act No 10 of 2004 ). On this basis, it has its own legal personality and fulfills sovereign tasks. The headquarters are in Pretoria , in the Brummeria district .
The SANBI follows its predecessor the National Botanical Institute (NBI), which emerged in 1989 from the merger of the National Botanic Gardens and the Botanical Research Institute .
The task of the institute is to facilitate the use of biodiversity data, to promote the development of information and knowledge and to build up appropriate capacities. With the botanical and zoological facilities under his leadership , the potential of biodiversity is preserved and made accessible to the public. In addition, there are other institutions of this type of work in South Africa that are maintained by other supporting institutions.
