The Atlanticum was an experience center on the subject of fish and fishing at the old fishing port of Bremerhaven . It has been closed since 2013.

prehistory

The Fischbahnhof forum was set up after the port's original use had declined more and more and a touristic use of the area had been considered. The former fish dispatch hall, a steel construction, was removed from its original location and reopened in 1996 with a new function. In addition to restaurants and shops, it housed the Atlanticum in particular.

The Atlanticum

The core of the Atlanticum was a 150,000 liter seawater aquarium, which not only allowed a view of the water world from the side, but also from below by means of a mirrored tunnel. On display were residents of the North Sea and the North Atlantic , such as plaice, dogfish, cod, lobster, spider crab and others.

A tidal model gives an impression of the changes in the habitat of these animals under the influence of ebb and flow. Information on the life, exploitation and marketing of sea animals is presented in multimedia form. The visitors can prove their practical skills using a lock and harbor model as well as practicing knots; A relief wall is provided especially for children, on which scratch-off pictures of marine animals can be made.

After it was closed in 2013, the premises were rebuilt and reopened as a (permanent) exhibition "Expedition North Sea".

Surroundings

Numerous fish restaurants and smokers have settled in the immediate vicinity of the Atlanticum. The departure point for harbor tours and the museum train to Bederkesa is also in the immediate vicinity , as is the museum ship Gera and the old Bremerhaven ice cream factory.
