description

Crucifixion group with register of saints

More splendid than the other Romanesque buildings in the area is the three-aisled pillar basilica with medieval frescoes .

In the choir there is a portrayal of Christophorus in the zigzag style . The life-size, brown-red robed figure can certainly still be assigned to the 13th century, while the other frescoes with their courtly hairdresses can already be assigned to the Sainte Chapelle style . Below that, in the apse of the north aisle, is a crucifixion group with a register of saints, the crucified Christ flanked by his mother Mary and his favorite disciple John , from the viewer on the left Saint Nicholas and Cordula , on the right side is Saint Peter with a large key detect. The creation of the crucifixion group can probably be set for the first half of the 14th century.

In the upper storey of the northern nave there are the remains of another cycle, the depiction of the legend of St. James . Only the blessing James with two adoring pilgrims has survived . Only sparse remains of the remaining figures were found. It remains open whether and what purpose the church on the Camino de Santiago had. The James cycle should also be in the first half of the 14th century. In the apse of the choir there is a representation of the risen Christ, again accompanied by Mary and John, which can be dated to the 15th century. The frescoes were whitewashed and mostly destroyed in 1606 when the Reformed Confession was introduced in the County of Sayn , which did not tolerate any pictorial representations . The frescoes visible today were rediscovered during repairs in 1915 and were last restored in 2006.
