Pedro Ferrándiz González (born November 20, 1928 in Alicante ) is a former Spanish basketball coach . He has spent most of his career at Real Madrid and is the most successful coach in history in Spain by titles.

Career

Pedro Ferrándiz began his career at Real Madrid in 1955 as a youth coach. After a two-year stint at CB Hesperia , he finally returned in 1959 as a coach for the first team of the Madrilenians. Under his leadership, the club began to become a fixture in Spanish and European basketball. In 1964, after losing two finals in a row, his team achieved their first victory in the European Cup , a triumph that could be repeated the following year. Under his leadership, he achieved five victories in the highest European competition, as well as twelve Spanish championship titles from the Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto and eleven cup victories .

In 1977 he was the only basketball coach to date to receive the Olympic medal . He was awarded the FIBA Order of Merit in November 2000. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on April 2, 2007 and the FIBA Hall of Fame on September 22, 2009 . In addition, he was named one of the 50 most important players in the history of the Europa League in 2008 .

Pedro Ferrándiz Foundation

In 1996, on the initiative of Pedro Ferrándiz, the International Center of Research and Documentation of Basketball , also known as the Pedro Ferrándiz Foundation, was set up in the Madrid suburb of Alcobendas . It is a 1,500 m² building with a roof that mimics a basketball. It houses exhibitions, discussion forums, congresses, educational courses and numerous publications. The showpiece of the building is the Samaranch Library (named after Juan Antonio Samaranch ), the largest basketball-related book collection in the world. It houses around 10,000 books and 950 magazines from 65 countries in a total of 35 languages.

FIBA Hall of Fame

In 1999 Pedro Ferrándiz had the idea of ​​building a hall of fame under FIBA and independent of the American Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame . The FIBA agreed, and so did this immediately adjacent to the building of Pedo Ferrándiz Foundation in Alcobendas . The four-storey, 2,000 m² building was opened in 2007, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the foundation of FIBA. Players, coaches, referees and officials who have shown particular services and achievements to basketball are accepted.
