Walter Szczerbiak (born August 21, 1949 in Hamburg ) is a former American basketball player . Due to his successful career in Europe, especially during his time at Real Madrid , he is listed by the Euroleague as one of the 50 most important personalities in European basketball .

His son Wally Szczerbiak was also a basketball player. From 1999 to 2009 he played in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves , Boston Celtics , Seattle SuperSonics and Cleveland Cavaliers .

career

Walter Szczerbiak began his career at George Washington University , where he played for four seasons for their basketball team, the Colonials . In 1971 he moved to the American Basketball Association (ABA) for the Pittsburgh Condors . After one season, his team broke up and he went to the EPBL (Today CBA) to the Wilkes-Barre Barons, with whom he was able to conquer the title in 1972/73, Szczerbiak himself controlled 24.6 points and 12.4 rebounds per game at.

He then got a one-year contract offer from the NBA team Buffalo Braves , but declined to move to Real Madrid in Spain . With the capital city he rose to one of the most important players. He won the European Champion Clubs' Cup three times and was named the most valuable player in the 1978 final with 25 points scored . With Real Madrid he also won four championships in a row (1973 / 74-1976 / 77). The offensive specialist Walter Szczerbiak was only used in the European Cup by coach Lolo Sainz during his last three years with the Spaniards (1977 / 78–1979 / 80) .

In 1980 Szczerbiak finally moved to the Italian Lega Basket Serie A , to Tropic Udine , where he spent two seasons. After another year in Spain, with CB Canarias , he ended his career in 1984.

Since 1986 Walter Szczerbiak has been working as a representative of the ACB League in the USA, where he has participated in numerous transfers of American players to Spain.
