Norbert Thimm (born August 21, 1949 in Dortmund ) is a former German national basketball player . In 1972 he was the first German basketball player to receive a contract with a foreign basketball club as a professional athlete . He is the father of the national basketball player Birte Thimm .

Career

Norbert Thimm already played as a Dortmund student in the basketball Bundesliga team of SSV Hagen.

In October 1968 the Bundesliga player, who was considered a particularly talented perspective player at the time , was appointed to the fifty-member "1972 Olympic Squad" by the Federal Coaching Council of the German Basketball Federation (DBB), chaired by the then Vice-President and Sports Manager of the DBB Anton Kartak . The Olympic squad was put together to begin the focused training preparation for the basketball tournament of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich and two FIBA European championship competitions in 1969 and 1971 (Norbert Thimm was one of seven DBB participants in the XX. Olympic Summer Games 1972 participated in all three international tournaments.).

Together with Jochen Pollex , also a player on the " Kartak List " published in October 1968 , Thimm moved to TuS 04 Leverkusen for the 1969/1970 season. With the two national players, the Leverkusen team managed the double of championship and cup in their second Bundesliga season , with Thimm, as the center, usually being one of the decisive players on his team. In 1970/1971 Leverkusen successfully defended the double and in 1971/1972 they achieved their third championship success in a row.

Already in his first season at TuS 04, Thimm, under the then national coach Miloslav Kříž , played as a regular in the senior national team of the DBB, which did not qualify for the 1969 FIBA European Championship in Thessaloniki ( Greece ) . At the FIBA European Championship in Germany in 1971 , the German national team finished ninth. Thimm was able to distinguish himself as one of the strongest rebounders of the tournament.

The following year, Germany again hosted a season highlight. In the line-up for the XX. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, there were four players from the reigning German champions alongside Norbert Thimm with builder Dieter Kuprella , winger Jochen Pollex and Center Dietrich Keller . At the Olympic basketball tournament in Munich, Norbert Thimm, then 23 years old, was used in all nine games under national coach Theodor Schober and scored a total of 143 points in 32 fouls whistled against him. This made Thimm the best thrower of the German Olympic team and at the same time one of the most successful throwers of the 1972 Olympic basketball tournament in Munich.

Immediately after the 1972 Summer Olympics, Thimm moved to Spain . He won the Spanish championship with Real Madrid in 1973 and 1974, but did not make his breakthrough as a permanent player in the "Starting Five" during this time. In 1974 he returned to Leverkusen and immediately won the cup final. In 1976 Leverkusen won the double for the third time with Thimm, and in 1979 they achieved their fifth championship victory. In 1981 Norbert Thimm ended his career after several injuries.

After failing to qualify for the European Championship in 1975, Thimm withdrew from the national team, but returned in 1979 for twelve international matches.

Norbert Thimm was also one of the German universities during his studies and represented Germany several times at the Universiade .

In the mid-1970s, the qualified psychologist began his professional career in the personnel department of Bayer AG in Leverkusen. Until his retirement for reasons of age from his long-term employment relationship in 2011, he was always involved in personnel selection and development . In addition to his professional activity as a trainer and functionary, he always remained closely and very interested in basketball and sport in general. As a “retiree”, Thimm is involved as a partner at two sports agencies.
