Richard Elmer "Joey" Dorsey (born December 16, 1983 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Dorsey played as a professional in the NBA for three years until 2011 without really gaining a foothold there. He then continued his career in Europe and was able to win the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 and a Greek championship with Olympiacos . In 2014 Dorsey also won the Spanish championship with FC Barcelona.

Career

Dorsey attended the "Prep School" Laurinburg Institute in the city of the same name in North Carolina to meet the requirements for admission to a degree. In 2004, when he was just under 21, he was accepted into the Tigers team at the University of Memphis , who played in the Conference USA (C-USA) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Under the well-known coach John Calipari , after losing the final of the championship tournament of the C-USA by one point against the Cardinals of the University of Louisville , it was initially only enough to qualify for the National Invitation Tournament , in which the Tigers against in the semifinals the hawks at Saint Joseph's University failed.

In the following three years the Tigers lost only one championship game against teams of the C-USA and also won the championship tournament of the C-USA. At the national NCAA finals tournament they lost in 2006 in the quarterfinals Elite Eight against the UCLA Bruins . A year later, the Tigers met the Buckeyes of Ohio State University in the same round in the final tournament and Dorsey made a name for himself with a declaration of war against Greg Oden , in which he put the performance of the player selected first in the 2007 NBA Draft in Asked a question and made oden bad. This backfired, however, after Oden was one of the key players in the Buckeyes' victory over the Tigers , while Dorsey was left with no points of his own.

A year later, the Tigers did better with Dorsey and reached the Final Four of the 2008 tournament, in which they beat the Bruins in the semifinals thanks to 15 rebounds from Dorsey and in the final a good two minutes before the end with nine points ahead of the University's Jayhawks of Kansas . But in particular awarded free throws by the later NBA professionals Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts gave Mario Chalmers ten seconds before the end the opportunity to equalize the game with a throw from beyond the three-point line and force an extension, which the Jayhawks won by seven points . From "Champion" Jayhawks five players in subsequent were equal Draft method of NBA selected while Dorsey nearly five years younger teammate Derrick Rose in the 2008 NBA draft was hired as the first player. Even before the finals top scorer Douglas-Roberts, Dorsey was selected in 33rd position by the Portland Trail Blazers, who then sent him to the Houston Rockets in a player swap.

In the Rockets Dorsey completed only three short appearances in the NBA in 2008/09 and has since been given over to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers farm team to gain match practice in the NBA Development League (D-League). In the NBA 2009/10 this was repeated before Dorsey came to the Sacramento Kings in February 2010 after another seven NBA appearances in a player swap, for which he had eight short appearances until the end of March. At the beginning of April, Dorsey was signed by the Toronto Raptors, for which he acted as a starter in 43 appearances in the 2010/11 NBA, including individual games , with an average playing time of a good twelve minutes per game. After Dorsey had scored three points and four rebounds per game for the Raptors, he was also released here at the end of the season.

For the 2011/12 season Dorsey went to Europe and played in the Spanish ACB league for the Basque club Caja Laboral from Vitoria-Gasteiz . At the end of January 2012, it was decided to split and Dorsey signed a contract with the Greek club Olympiacos from Piraeus . With this club he was able to surprisingly defeat PBK CSKA Moscow in the final seconds in the final seconds of the final of the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 with one point difference and win the title after almost the entire game had been partly behind. Dorsey also triumphed over the former Jayhawk Sasha Kaun , against whom he had lost in the NCAA final. The Greek Cup in the play-offs of the A1 Ethniki could Olympiakos with Dorsey against arch-rivals and defending champion Panathinaikos win. After Dorsey had signed a two-year contract with Olympiakos despite rumors of a return to the NBA, he forced his contract termination at Olympiakos with negative comments to his teammates in late October 2012.

Eventually Dorsey moved to Türkiye Basketbol Ligi and continued the season that had begun for Royal Halı from Gaziantep . The first division newcomer missed entry into the play-offs for the Turkish championship because of the poorer direct comparison at the end of the season. For the 2013/14 season, Dorsey was brought back to the ACB league by the Spanish runners-up FC Barcelona and this also returned to the Euroleague, in which he reached the Final Four tournament with the Catalans in the 2013/14 ULEB Euroleague . In the semifinals, Dorsey and his team went down against national arch-rivals Real Madrid , against whom they had already lost the national cup final in the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto with a point difference, with 62: 100 and finished after a victory in the "small final" on End third place. In the play-off final series for the Spanish championship, Barcelona were able to retaliate against the main round first and defending champion Real and dethrone the “royal” from the capital in four games. In the third edition of this final series pairing in a row, the Catalans around Dorsey took the title back from Madrid.

For the NBA 2014/15 Dorsey was again committed by the Houston Rockets, where he had once started his professional career as in the NBA. The Texans gave him a two-year contract in July 2014. After just one season, however, he was given to the Denver Nuggets , but released there, which is why he decided to continue his career in Turkey with Galatasaray Istanbul . He then returned to Barcelona again, followed by stints in Turkey, Greece and South Korea. At the end of November 2019, Dorsey was signed by the German Bundesliga club Mitteldeutscher BC . MBC coach Björn Harmsen hoped that the old master would strengthen his defense and leadership personality.
