Chalmers was one of the most talented youth basketball players in Alaska before he was accepted into the Jayhawks team there in 2004 by the University of Kansas . At KU he established himself as a good point collector (12 points per game) and very good defensive player, who achieved 2.5 steals per game and was twice elected to the all-defensive team of his conference .

In 2008, he led the Jayhawks to the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship final, where they met the Memphis Tigers . With the final whistle, Chalmers threw a threesome that saved KU into overtime, where the Jayhawks eventually won. Chalmers was named MVP (Most Valuable Player) in the final round.

In the 2008 NBA draft , Chalmers was selected 34th by the Minnesota Timberwolves , but was passed directly to the Miami Heat . At the side of superstar Dwyane Wade Chalmers started in all 82 games of the season and averaged 10.0 points and 4.9 assists. In addition, he established himself as the third best ball thief in the league with 160 steals (2.0 per game). With the Heat, Chalmers made it to the 2009 NBA playoffs .

After the signing of LeBron James and Chris Bosh before the 2010/2011 season, Chalmers remained as one of the few players of the preseason part of the strongly changed squad of the Heat. He reached the 2010/11 NBA final with the team , in which the Heat were subject to the Dallas Mavericks in six games. Chalmers was able to record considerable service time in this series.

Chalmers in 2010

In 2011/12 , the Heat made it to the final again and this time won the series against the Oklahoma City Thunder with 4: 1. With that, Chalmers celebrated his first NBA title. In 2013 he managed to defend his title with the Heat, and in 2014 he made it to the finals again, but lost to the San Antonio Spurs . Chalmers was an important member of the rotation and starting point guard of the Heat during these years.

After LeBron James left the Heat in 2014, Chalmers took on greater responsibility for the Heat and achieved a career record of 10.2 points on average. However, the playoffs were missed.

In November 2015 Chalmers was transferred to the Memphis Grizzlies for Beno Udrih, among others .

His season ended on March 10, 2016 after he tore his right Achilles tendon in a game for the Grizzlies. He was released from the team shortly afterwards.
