Richard Clay "Rip" Hamilton (born February 14, 1978 in Coatesville , Pennsylvania ) is a former American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 1999 to 2013, nine years of which with the Detroit Pistons . At a height of 1.98 meters, he mostly played in the shooting guard position. Hamilton was an NBA All-Star three times in his career and won the 2004 NBA Championship with the Pistons.

Career

college

During his college years, from 1996 to 1999, Hamilton played for the Connecticut Huskies , with whom he had a successful time. In 1999 he was named NCAA basketball champion with the Huskies and named 1999's Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.

NBA

Washington Wizards

In the 1999 NBA draft , Richard Hamilton was drawn in 7th place by the Washington Wizards , with whom he then signed a 3-year contract. In his first season for the Wizards, Hamilton mostly came off the bench, only started in 12 games and scored 9 points on average. In the next two years he started more often and scored significantly more points than before (18.1 and 20.0), but with the Wizards he could never reach the playoffs. On September 11, 2002, Hamilton was traded to the Detroit Pistons along with Hubert Davis and Bobby Simmons in exchange for Jerry Stackhouse , Brian Cardinal and Ratko Varda .

Detroit Pistons

After Hamilton was traded to the Pistons in 2002, he signed a 7-year contract and rose to become one of the NBA's best shooting guards . There he formed one of the best backcourts in the league with Chauncey Billups . He helped the Pistons to win the NBA championship with a win against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2004. In 2005 they made it back to the NBA finals, where they lost to the San Antonio Spurs around superstar Tim Duncan .

Since suffering two broken nose bones while playing basketball, Hamilton has been playing with a plastic protective mask, which has since become his trademark. On December 27, 2006, he scored a career high of 51 points in a game that included three overtimes, against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden . On May 13, 2008, he overtook Isiah Thomas as a player of the Detroit Pistons with the most points in the NBA play-offs .

Hamilton was a constant scorer during his time and averaged 18.4 points in Detroit. Problems with Pistons coach John Kuester in the course of the 2010/2011 season , however, relegated Hamilton to the bench, which reduced his playing time.

Chicago Bulls

For the 2011/12 season, the Pistons prematurely terminated his contract. Hamilton then moved to the Chicago Bulls and received a contract there until 2013. Hamilton played for two years for the Bulls, but completed only 78 of a possible 164 season games due to injury and scored 10.5 points per game. After the 2012/13 season, Hamilton's contract with the Bulls was dissolved. After not finding a club, Hamilton announced his resignation in February 2015.
