Career

Boston Celtics (2005-2007)

Although Ryan Gomes had a good college season as a power forward at Providence College , the then 22-year-old was not selected by the Boston Celtics until the end of the 2nd round, as most scouts and teams believed Gomes' size and strengths wouldn't fit in well with the NBA. The first role that Gomes was given in Boston was that of substitute for Paul Pierce . After the Celtics had made a few trades and center Kendrick Perkins injured himself, Gomes moved into the starting five. Even when Perkins returned, Gomes was able to maintain his place in the team and came to 7.6 points and 4.9 rebounds in 22.6 minutes after the disappointing start of the season. The Boston number 4 also managed 7 double doubles and was called up to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team at the end of the season . Because he was able to convince in the 2006 Summer League Team of the Celtics, he was also elected to the Summer League All-First Team.

In the following season, Gomes remained the starter. In 60 of his 73 completed games he was in the starting five and averaged 12.1 points and 5.6 rebounds in 31.2 minutes. Gomes also scored his first triple-double that year (10 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against the Charlotte Bobcats ) and set a new career high in points (31 against the Washington Wizards ) and rebounds (17 against the Minnesota Timberwolves ) on. After Gomes was injured in early March 2007, he reported back in April with a greatly improved three-point throw and at the end of the season had a three-point rate of 38.1%. This value is his season best to this day.

Minnesota Timberwolves (2007-2010)

In a spectacular trade in which Boston traded Ryan Gomes along with Gerald Green, Al Jefferson , Theo Ratliff, Sebastian Telfair and draft picks for Kevin Garnett , Gomes played for the Minnesota Timberwolves the following season. Gomes completed all 82 games of the season for Minnesota, set a new career high (35 points against the Golden State Warriors) and improved his values in rebounds, assists and steals, although he received less playing time.

In the 2008–2009 season, Gomes also played all 82 games for Minnesota and because he was allocated more playing time (31.9 minutes), at the end of the season he achieved the highest average of his career in points (13.3 points) and blocks (0 , 3 blocks).

In the 2009 season, Gomes' playing time dropped a little as rookie Wayne Ellington and shooting guard Corey Brewer competed with Gomes. Gomes came up with the lowest point and rebound average since his rookie season. In one of his last games for Minnesota, on June 2, 2010, he converted another five threesomes against the Memphis Grizzlies in 2010 and thus set his career high.

Los Angeles Clippers (2010-2012)

On June 24, 2010, the Timberwolves sent him to Portland along with the draft rights for Luke Babbitt. In return, Martell Webster came to Minnesota. The Trail Blazers released Gomes shortly afterwards. On July 8, 2010 the Los Angeles Clippers signed him, where he competed with Al-Farouq Aminu and Rasual Butler. His stats deteriorated significantly over the two years until he was fired after the 2011/2012 season. His remaining salary is not counted towards the team's salary as the Clippers dismissed him through the amnesty clause.
