Martell Webster (born December 4, 1986 in Edmonds , Washington ) is a former American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2005 to 2015 , most recently with the Washington Wizards . Webster is one of the last players to join the NBA straight out of high school due to a new draft rule that began in the 2006 season .

Career

Webster came out of high school as a great talent and had already accepted the University of Washington , but decided shortly thereafter to enroll in the NBA draft and thus skipped college .

NBA

The eight-foot-tall Webster was selected 6th in the 2005 draft by the Portland Trail Blazers . In January 2006 he was assigned to the Fort Worth Flyers , who played in the NBA Development League (making him the highest draft pick ever to be expelled into the D-League at the time), but he was already in February called back to the Blazers roster. The 2008-09 season he had to suspend after the first game due to a foot injury.

After five years with the Blazers, where he could not meet the high expectations, he was transferred to the Minnesota Timberwolves . Due to injury, Webster only played 46 ( 2010/11 ) or 47 ( 2011/12 ) out of a possible 82 games. The Timberwolves disbanded Websters in the summer of 2012.

He was then hired by the Washington Wizards . At the Wizards, he put on career bests with 11.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists . He started in 62 of 79 games and hit with 42.2% from the three-point line, a career record. He reached his career high of 34 points on March 16, 2013, against the Phoenix Suns . He got 7 three-point throws. As a reward for his good season, the Wizards extended his contract in the summer of 2013. In the following years, Webster fought repeatedly with injuries in his back, after which he could complete only 32 games in the 2014-15 season . After a damaged cartilage was diagnosed in his right hip, the 2015–16 season ended prematurely for him. A short time later, in November 2015, the Wizards dissolved the contract with Webster again.

On September 30, 2017, Webster announced his retirement.

Others

Webster is the cousin of Jason Terry , who was also a professional basketball player in the NBA.

Webster was nicknamed The Definition by a friend . It is a play on words related to his last name (based on Webster's Dictionary ).
