Jamaal Abdul-Lateef Wilkes (born May 2, 1953 in Berkeley , California ) is a retired American basketball player.
Born Jackson Keith Wilkes, he changed his name in 1975 for religious reasons.
In the position of small forward Wilkes played successfully college basketball for the UCLA Bruins from 1971 to 1974 . In 1972 and 1973 the team won the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship undefeated . A total of 88 games were won in a row under coach John Wooden . In 1973 and 1974, Wilkes was elected to NCAA All-American First Teams. He then signed up for the 1974 NBA draft . There his teammate and later Hall of Famer Bill Walton was elected first. Wilkes was selected in eleventh place by the Golden State Warriors .
In his first season he was voted Rookie of the Year and won the championship with the Warriors. In the following year he was able to further improve his performance. An average of 17.8 points and 8.8 rebounds led to his first nomination for the All-Star Game . Because of his skills in defense, he was as in the next season in the NBA All-Defensive Second Team .
Before the 1977/78 season, Wilkes moved as a free agent to the Los Angeles Lakers . The Warriors received a first-round draft pick and cash as compensation . Wilkes played for the Lakers for the next eight years. With him, the Lakers were able to win the title in 1980 , 1982 and 1985 , with the last title he missed the second half of the season and the playoffs due to a torn ligament in his left knee. Wilkes was elected to the All-Star Team in 1981 and 1983 . With an average of 22.6 points, the 1980/81 season was his best in this regard. In the following years his scores steadily deteriorated. On August 29, 1985, he was released from the Lakers.
On September 27, 1985, he signed a contract with local rivals the Los Angeles Clippers . After thirteen moderately successful games, he ended his career on December 26 of the same year.
In all games of the regular NBA seasons, Jamaal Wilkes scored 14,644 points, got 5,117 rebounds and gave 2,050 assists . On average, that results in 17.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
On April 2, 2012, Wilkes was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in recognition of his accomplishments .
During halftime in the game against the Portland Trail Blazers on December 28, 2012, his former shirt number, 52 , was withdrawn from the Los Angeles Lakers and is now displayed under the roof.
