Anton Kiefer (born November 5, 1627 in Solothurn , † February 10, 1672 in the Mariastein Monastery ) was a Swiss Benedictine monk , composer, organist, prior and librarian of the Mariastein Monastery.

Life

P. Anton (Johann Rudolf) Kiefer was born in Solothurn as the son of Jakob Kiefer and Magdalena Byß. He was the nephew of Abbot Fintan Kiefer. No data are guaranteed about admission to the monastery school in Mariastein; he made his profession on January 22nd, 1644.

As a student in the convent in Mariastein, Father Anton received extensive musical training; but there is evidence of his organ studies at the monastery in Schönenwerd after his profession (August 1644 to December 1645). After studying philosophy in the Muri monastery (from 1645) and being ordained a priest in Mariastein on April 3, 1652, Fr. Anton Kiefer took on duties in the monastery as a teacher at the monastery’s own theological school, as a prior, librarian, novice master and brother instructor. Father Anton Kiefer died on February 10, 1672.
