Linus Memmel

Linus Memmel (born July 24, 1914 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber , † July 22, 2004 in Würzburg ) was a German lawyer and politician.

Life and work

After attending the Progymnasium in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and graduating from the Alten Gymnasium in Würzburg in 1933 , Memmel began studying law at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , completing the first state examination in 1937 and the second state examination in 1941. After graduating, he joined the K.St.V. Normannia Würzburg as Philistine Senior. He then worked for the public prosecutor at the Rothenburg District Court and at the Nuremberg-Fürth Regional Court . In 1944 he was appointed to the district judge. In the meantime he took part in World War II as an infantry officer and was wounded several times.

Memmel was a public prosecutor at the district court of Würzburg from 1947 to 1951 and was again active as a local court advisor in 1951. From 1954 to 1957 he was chairman of the juvenile lay judge in Würzburg. He was also a member of the Presidium of the German Atomic Forum and Chairman of the DJK Association for Würzburg. He was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit on June 5, 1968 .

Linus Memmel was married twice. He has five children from his first marriage.

Political party

According to various sources, Memmel was a member of the NSDAP. He was chairman of the Bavarian Party in Lower Franconia. In 1953 he joined the CSU and from 1963 to 1968 was a member of the party's state executive in Bavaria .

Memmel was a council member of the city ​​of Würzburg from 1952 to 1957 .

Memmel was a member of the German Bundestag from 1957 to 1976. From 1961 to 1969 he was a board member of the CSU regional group in the Bundestag. In parliament he represented the constituency of Würzburg. In the third legislative period , he and his party colleagues Friedrich Bauereisen , Richard Jaeger , Franz Xaver Unertl and Albrecht Schlee submitted a motion to reinstate the death penalty for murder, but this was not discussed. From 1961 to 1965 he was chairman of the Bundestag committee for family and youth issues. Before the vote on the 26th amendment to the Basic Law, he and his parliamentary group colleague Friedrich Kempfler and the SPD MP Klaus-Peter Schulz made a declaration in June that he had to abstain from voting because he was the future federal authority for support university construction, but reject lowering the voting age from 21 to 18 years. In the declaration he criticized what he saw as the nonsensical amalgamation of two objects that had no relation to each other. In March 1974 he then voted (contrary to the majority of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group) together with Kempfler and Schulz, who had meanwhile converted to the Union parliamentary group, against lowering the age of majority to 18 years.

Memmel was a member of the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Western European Union from 1963 to 1965 . From 1966 to 1977 he was a member of the European Parliament .
