The Monastery of St. Moritz was the cathedral chapter of the archbishopric of Magdeburg . It existed from 968 to 1810. Together with the newly founded diocese of Magdeburg in 1994 , a cathedral chapter was created again.

history

St. Sebastian at Magdeburg , since 1994 the seat of the new cathedral chapter

The cathedral chapter was probably formed when the Archdiocese of Magdeburg was founded in 968. It was supposed to support the archbishop in the management of the archbishopric and in the daily choral service . Until the 14th century, little information about individual members remained.

In 1567 the cathedral chapter became Lutheran . Although the Archbishopric and Archdiocese of Magdeburg were secularized in 1648 , the cathedral chapter was able to continue to exist. However, it lost some rights such as the election of the administrator and the filling of new canons. In 1810 it was repealed by the government of the Kingdom of Westphalia .

With the establishment of the Magdeburg diocese in 1994, a new cathedral chapter was established. It is located at the Sankt Sebastian Church in Magdeburg .

Structures

When it was founded, the chapter should consist of 12 canons. No further details have been received.

In the 15th century the cathedral chapter consisted of 19 noble canons and a lecturer. They were entitled to elect a new archbishop and decide on chapter affairs. They had income from their own benefices. Usually they were not present and were represented by vicars at the daily choir prayers. There were also 18 other canons, who were not entitled to vote or to vote.

The chapter was directed and represented externally by the Provost , who, however, had hardly dealt with internal affairs of the chapter since the 15th century. The internal direction was held by a dean who was supported and represented by a senior. There were also other offices, such as custodian, scholastic, cantor and others.

The cathedral chapter had income from its own property in some villages in the area.
