Wilhelm-Günther Vahrson (born May 1955 in Iserlohn ) is a German geographer and university professor . Since December 1998 he has been President of the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development .

Live and act

After attending primary school and the humanistic grammar school in Steglitz in Berlin , Vahrson studied geography and mathematics at the Free University of Berlin from 1975 to 1982 , where he wrote a dissertation on " Soil physics and groundwater genesis in 1985 within the framework of the Collaborative Research Center 69" Geoscientific Problems of Arid Areas " of the Libyan Desert ”.

During a multi-year guest professorship at the Escuela de Ciencias Geográficas of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Costa Rica , he devoted himself to teaching, further training for lecturers and curriculum development in the fields of applied climatology , soil protection and disaster control . Here he led various projects, often in cooperation with the national disaster control organization (“Comisión Nacional de Emergencias”) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations .

Since 1993 he has been working as a university lecturer for landscape studies in the field of landscape use and nature conservation at the then Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences, which was re-established in 1992. After his habilitation in physical geography at the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1996 on the subject of “Characteristics, distribution and geo-ecological significance of heavy tropical rain”, he has been elected rector of the then Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences since December 1998, succeeding the founding rector Gunther Wolff, who has since died. In 2018 he was elected for a fifth term.

During his tenure, he paid particular attention to systematic and visible profiling of the Eberswalde University in the field of sustainability . The renaming to and consistent orientation as the University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde was and is being promoted by him.
