The International Office (AAA) or in English, the International Office (IO) to universities and colleges of contact for all questions relating to a study abroad , in this regard scholarships , counseling for the recognition of credits upon return are (responsible for examining offices ) as well as for foreign students in matters related to studying at the German university. Such a position exists at almost all universities and technical colleges, whereby the traditional name has been replaced by International Office at many universities . Also common, especially in Switzerland or Austria, are terms such as International Relations or International Office . At smaller universities, the tasks are carried out by the student secretariat.

Academic international offices at universities are usually also responsible for the admission or preparation for the admission of foreign students who want to study here. When admitting to studies, the international offices check, among other things, the university entrance qualification (recognition of foreign certificates and educational qualifications) of the applicant and whether the knowledge of the German language is sufficient. If no corresponding proof of German language skills can be submitted, applicants must take the university language test. Enrollment ( matriculation ) at the university is only possible when the foreign certificates have been recognized as university entrance qualifications with the notification of admission . The higher education institutions base their recognition on a manual from the Central Office for Foreign Education of the Secretariat of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs in the Federal Republic of Germany . The letter of admission is usually one of the requirements for a student visa, where one is required. Another requirement for the visa is sufficient funds to support yourself. This is determined by the embassies in connection with the immigration authorities of the cities or districts.

For admission to study at universities in the European Union , all applicants from the member states are treated equally with regard to a limited number of places . The respective admission law of the country in which the course is to be started applies, not the law of the home country.
