Eastern European Studies

With Eastern European Studies , a number of courses at various universities in the German-speaking countries is called, dealing with countries and cultures in Central and Eastern Europe to deal with. The courses are mostly designed to be interdisciplinary. The interdisciplinary approach should enable students to get to know the countries and cultures of Central and Eastern Europe from as different perspectives as possible.

Traditional Eastern European Studies , especially Slavic Studies and Eastern European History , usually form the core disciplines of these courses. Depending on the university, they are supplemented, for example, by intercultural communication, ethnology , political science, law or economics. Although Eastern European studies refer to the entire Central and Eastern European area, a de facto concentration on Slavic countries and cultures can be established. The Baltic states or Hungary are usually only marginally touched upon in Eastern European studies.

The individual Eastern European courses differ considerably from one another. B. in the required degree of interdisciplinarity, the possible combinations of subjects, the obligation to study abroad or internships abroad, the respective country-specific priorities as well as general questions about the organization of the course of study. Eastern European courses are now offered as both Bachelor and Master degrees.
