The wingless creak insect ( Micropodisma salamandra ) is a species of grasshopper from the family of field locusts (Acrididae).

features

The wingless creaker is slim built. Males reach a body length of 14 to 18 millimeters, females 20 to 24 millimeters. The basic color of the body is a bright yellow-green. A dark longitudinal band runs from the rear edge of the eyes in females to the tympanum , in males to the tip of the abdomen . The coloring of the legs is more yellowish olive. Shortly before the knee joint, there is a distinctive, reddish, indistinct ring on the thighs. The species is completely wingless. Due to the lack of wings, the hearing organ, which is well developed, is clearly recognizable.

Occurrence and way of life

The distribution area includes Slovenia, Croatia and southern and eastern Austria, where the heat-loving species is, however, less common. Their habitat are low shrubs on the edges of paths and forests. Adults can be found between June and August.
