from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Johann Joseph Wessely (born June 27, 1860 in Vienna , † November 21, 1931 in Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge ; also: Carl Franz Joseph Wessely ) was an Austrian philologist , papyrologist and head of the papyrus collection of the K. u. K. Court Library , from 1920 Austrian National Library .

Life

Karl Wessely was the son of Anton Wessely, an engineer in the service of the state railway , and Karolina Morawek. The marriage with his wife Marie († July 27, 1918) remained childless.

From 1870 to 1878 Wessely attended the grammar school of the KK Theresianische Akademie in Vienna , where he passed his Matura on July 6, 1878 . In October 1878 he began his studies at the philosophical faculty of the KK University of Vienna . The Absolutorium he received on April 15, 1882. In 1885 he received the philosophical at the same university doctorate .

From 1886 to 1904 he was a member of the teaching staff at the KK Staatsgymnasium in the 3rd district of Vienna , where he was given leave of absence from 1900 "for the purpose of use at the court library". From 1904 to 1922 he was curator of the papyrus collection of the K. u. K. Court Library . In 1918 Wessely completed his habilitation as a private lecturer at the University of Vienna , but continued to work at the court library until he retired in 1922.

On November 21, 1931, Karl Wessely “died of a heart condition”. On November 25, 1931, his blessing took place at the Vienna Central Cemetery .

During his studies he published his first papers on papyrus studies . From 1881 onwards, several articles appeared almost annually in the Vienna Studies . Right from the start, he played a key role in the processing of the papyri of the first Fayyum find acquired by Archduke Rainer in 1883 .

“He edited the“ Greek Department ”of the guide published by the undersigned [ Karabacek ] in 1894 through the exhibition (p. 61–130), a large number of contributions in the also edited by the undersigned: Communications from the Archduke Papyrus Collection Rainer , as well as a number of articles in the reports from the meetings of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna and in numerous specialist journals. Prof. Dr. With the abundance of his solid work, Wessely has attracted general attention and is a recognized authority in the field of Greek papyrus studies. "

In addition to the extensive contributions for the Philosophical-Historical Class of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna and the communications from the Archduke Rainer Papyrus Collection, from 1901 he published almost annual contributions in the studies of palaeography and papyrus studies. Further articles appear in the annual reports of the Vienna KK Franz-Josef-Gymnasium and the KK Staatsgymnasien in III. District and in Hernals .

Outside of his academic activities, his interests were diverse. He was an avid collector of minerals and fossils and steadily expanded his collection in his native Leithagebirge . This collection, but also various folklore objects that he had compiled , went to the Dr. Karl Wessely local and school museum, which was destroyed during the war years . His intensive scientific work did not prevent him from making his knowledge accessible to broad sections of the population. This is supported by his articles published in Urania from 1908, such as:

  • Mineralogical walks of a Viennese, 23.1, Vienna 1908, 205–208.
  • Where did the cat come from ?, 6.2, Vienna 1909, 69–71.
  • Our oldest known fish, 15.2, Vienna 1909, 230–232.
  • A newly found speech ascribed to the prophet Jeremias, 39.2, Vienna 1909, 616–618.

His private papyrus collection was sold to Prague after his death .
