Theodor Seif

Theodor Seif (born August 1, 1894 in Vienna ; † January 12, 1939 there ) was an Austrian scholar of Islam .

Life

Theodor Seif, the son of a typesetter in the state printing company, attended the Kk Academy for Oriental Languages from 1909 (at the age of 15) , where he learned Arabic, Persian and Turkish. After graduating from high school (1913), he studied oriental studies as well as history and geography of the orient at the University of Vienna . He achieved his doctorate in 1918 with the dissertation Critical Investigations into the Arabic Sources on the Ancient History of Islam . From 1916 he taught Turkish and Arabic at the Academy for Oriental Languages ​​(until 1921). From 1920 he worked as a scientific clerk at the Austrian National Library , where in 1923 he was appointed head of the oriental department of the papyrus collection. In this capacity, Seif organized and inventoried the library's Arabic manuscripts. On July 26, 1924 , Seif completed his habilitation in Islamic studies, especially Arabic and Turkish studies . From 1928 he held a teaching position for Arabic studies at the University of Vienna. In 1930 he left the library service and worked as an associate professor of Arabic studies at the University of Vienna (since October 30).

After Seif's early death, the Austrian National Library acquired his estate.
