Hermann Harrauer

Hermann Harrauer (born April 27, 1941 in Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis ) is an Austrian papyrologist .

Life

After attending elementary school in Hofkirchen, he switched to the humanistic grammar school in the boarding school of the Discalced Carmelites in Linz in 1953 and to the humanistic Rainer grammar school in Vienna in 1957 . However, he completed his school career in 1961 in Wilhering Abbey with the Matura . He then studied Classical Philology , Ancient History and Classical Archeology at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1969 and then worked as a research assistant. During this time he wrote a reference work on Zeus together with Hans Schwabl . In May 1972 he accepted a position at the Austrian National Library (ÖNB). This activity was interrupted in 1973 by military service with the armed forces and in 1984 he became head of the papyrus collection of the ÖNB . He has been giving lectures in Greek and Latin papyrology since 1981 , but it was not until 1987 that he qualified as a professor in this subject with a paper on New Texts on Taxation in the 3rd Century BC. In 1995 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Vienna and in 1999 he was appointed professor . On December 1, 2005, he retired.
