Helene Loebenstein
Helene Loebenstein , née Helene Zeissl , (born July 18, 1918 in Vienna ; † August 27, 2010 ) was an Austrian Arabist and papyrologist .
Helene Zeissl, daughter of the section head in the Federal Ministry of Education Hermann Zeissl (1888–1967), studied Egyptology, Assyrian, Arabic and Syriac at the University of Vienna from 1936 after graduating from high school . a. with Viktor Christian . In 1938 she was considered a “ first degree hybrid ”, but was allowed to continue her studies for the time being; However, the Reich Ministry of Education refused to graduate . At the intervention of her professors, she was exceptionally allowed to do a doctorate, which took place in July 1940 with the thesis “Ethiopians and Assyrians in Egypt. Contributions to the history of the late Egyptian period. ”She then worked as a secretary and interpreter. From 1944 to 1945 she was drafted into service. In 1946 she was employed as a librarian at the Austrian National Library and mainly dealt with oriental manuscripts. From 1962 until her retirement in 1984 she was director of the papyrus collection of the Austrian National Library.
