Alois Walde

Alois Walde (born November 30, 1869 in Innsbruck , † October 3, 1924 in Königsberg ) was an Austrian Indo-Europeanist , classical philologist and linguist .

Life

Alois Walde studied classical philology and comparative linguistics at the University of Innsbruck (mainly in Frederick pride ), where he 1894 auspiciis sub imperatoris Dr. phil. received his doctorate . In 1895 he was employed as a clerk at the university library. A year later he completed his habilitation (first at the University of Innsbruck) in linguistics. In the course of his part-time teaching activity, he received the title of "extraordinary professor" in 1904 and was appointed personal associate professor in 1907.

In 1909 Walde moved to the University of Giessen as a full professor in his field . In 1912 he returned to the University of Innsbruck as the successor to his teacher Stolz, where he became dean of the faculty in 1914 and rector of the university in 1916 . The Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna elected him in 1917 as a corresponding member.

In 1922 Walde moved to the University of Königsberg . In the same year he accepted a position at the University of Breslau in 1924 , which he could no longer follow. He died on October 3, 1924 at the age of 54.

Walde made contributions to the laryngeal theory and above all to the investigation of the vocabulary of the Indo-European languages . His multi-volume etymological dictionaries have been reprinted and expanded several times and are still in use today.
