Adolf Martin Ritter

Adolf Martin Ritter (born November 23, 1933 in Schwarzenborn ) is a German theologian and church historian . He is a professor emeritus at Heidelberg University .

Adolf Martin Ritter's parents were the Protestant pastor Walter Ritter, who was missing in the war in 1945, and his wife, the nurse and welfare worker Ilse Ritter born. Suabedissen.

From 1939 to 1953, Ritter attended primary school in Münchhausen , Marburg district , and later the humanistic grammar school in Marburg. He completed a degree in Protestant theology in Marburg , Heidelberg , Göttingen and Athens. In the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck , he was appointed pastors ordained . At the University of Heidelberg he obtained his doctorate in theology in 1962 with the text Studies on the History and Theology of the Second Ecumenical Council of Constantinople 381 . For many years, Ritter was assistant to the Göttingen church historian Carl Andresen . In 1970 he completed his habilitation in church history in Göttingen with his study Charisma in the understanding of Joannes Chrysostom and his time and worked there as a lecturer and finally as a professor. From 1978 to 1981 he held a professorship for church history at the University of Marburg. Afterwards he was professor for historical theology ( patristic ) in Heidelberg until his retirement in March 1999 . His main research interests are ancient and medieval Christianity, Eastern ecclesiastical studies and contemporary church history. Ritter is a long-time member of the Heidelberg Colloquium on Christian Texts from Antiquity, the "Church Fathers Colloquium".

Ritter was president of the Association Internationale d'Études Patristiques (1983-1991) and the Patristic Commission of the German Academies of Sciences (from 1996). He was twice awarded honorary doctorates by Romanian universities (2000 Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj , 2002 University of Oradea ).

Adolf Martin Ritter is married and has two sons.
