Ecclesia in Urbe

Ecclesia in Urbe is an Apostolic Constitution with which Pope John Paul II on January 1, 1998 “ reorganizes the Vicariate of the City of Rome ”.

Based on the Apostolic Constitution Vicariae potestatis in urbe , which Paul VI. Published on January 6, 1977, John Paul II explains in the opening paragraphs the importance of the Vicariate of Rome. He describes its importance for the believers and gives the reasons for the revision. In the following articles and paragraphs, in addition to the profile description, precise structures, tasks and personnel composition as well as the administrative work and jurisdiction for the Vicariate of Rome are laid down. Thus, the Diocese of Rome and the Cardinal Vicar who administers it on behalf of the Pope are subject to the ordinances of this Apostolic Constitution, which came into force on May 1, 1998.
