The John Paul II Pontifical Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Studies ( Latin: Pontificium Institutum Theologicum pro Scientiis de Matrimonio et Familia ) was established by Pope Francis on September 8, 2017 with the apostolic letter Summa familiae cura in the form of a motu proprio . The John Paul II Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family , which had existed since 1981, was dissolved with the same letter.

leader

Pope John Paul II established the Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family in 1981 with the Apostolic Constitution Magnum Matrimonii Sacramentum . The Pope was concerned with the question of pastoral care and responsibility.

The post-synodal letter Amoris laetitia on love in the family of Pope Francis referred to the deliberations and results of the ordinary Synod of Bishops on the pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization. In the aftermath of the two Synods of Bishops on Marriage and Family, some institute representatives repeatedly expressed their concerns about the changes and the further development of the Church's moral teaching .

In August 2016, the Pope had appointed Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia as the Institute's new Grand Chancellor . At the end of October 2016, the Pope addressed the institute directly in a personal address and asked it to reorientate. With his Motu proprio Summa familiae cura , Pope Francis dissolved the previous institute.

The new institute

The new institute is called the Pontifical Theological Institute John Paul II for Marriage and Family Studies . It is entitled to award the academic degrees of diploma , licentiate and doctorate and belongs to the Pontifical Lateran University . Students can obtain degrees in two fields of study: on the one hand theology of marriage and the family and on the other hand the sciences of marriage and the family.

The focus of the institute's work should be to take into account “the anthropological-cultural change”. Furthermore, the results of the two Synods of Bishops on marriage and the family, as recorded in Amoris laetitia , should be deepened. It is designed to work with the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life .

Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia will head the institute as Grand Chancellor.
