La Motte is a municipality ( Municipalité ) in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue administrative region in the Canadian province of Québec .

Since the curial cardinal Marc Ouellet from La Motte was considered papabile in the conclave of 2013 , the cellar of an old church had been converted into a media center due to the rush of press.

geography

The community is located in southwest Quebec between the cities of Amos and Malartic , from which it is approximately 30 km away.

The nearby Route 117 to Val-d'Or and Rouyn-Noranda are achieved. The Route 109 leads in a north-south direction through the municipality. The eastern border of the territory is formed by the Rivière Harricana , which forms two bulges at the height of La Motte: Lac Malartic to the southeast and Lac La Motte to the northeast of the village.

The municipal area has a size of 214.40 km², of which 176.76 km² are land and 37.64 km² are water. In 2011 the population was 457, which is an increase of 15.7% compared to 2006.

history

With the arrival of the railway in Amos in 1913, the area around La Motte could be well populated. The route led from Abitibi via Lac-aux-Sables , La Tuque and Senneterre to the city of Québec . The number of settlers in northwest Québec increased significantly as a result.

La Motte is named after Guillaume-Jérôme Vacquier de Lamothe, a French officer who fought under Louis-Joseph de Montcalm .
