The Rivière Harricana ( French ) or Harricana River ( English , also Harricanaw River ) is a river in western Québec and northeastern Ontario in Canada.

It has a length of 533 km, a catchment area of 29,300 km² and an average discharge of 570 m³ / s. While 80% of the catchment area is in Québec, the river flows a short distance through Ontario before pouring into Hannah Bay at the southern end of James Bay . Shortly before its mouth, the Kesagami River meets the Rivière Harricana from the left.

Its originality, the easy accessibility of its upper course and the possibility of paddling to Moosonee make the Harricana popular for canoe tourists .

geography

The Harricana River has its origin in Lac Blouin just north of Val-d'Or . The lakes Lac De Montigny and Lac Lemoine are also located here . The river flows through a number of lakes, including Lac Malartic . After passing the city of Amos, it flows through another important lake: Lac Obalski .

To the north of Amos, the river crosses a heavily forested area where extensive logging takes place. At its confluence with Hannah Bay, the forest is decreasing and is being replaced by a swampy landscape. Here the Harricana reaches a high flow speed with a simultaneously low gradient.
