Rivière Turgeon is a river in Canada , in the administrative regions Abitibi-Témiscamingue and North-du-Québec in Québec , and a short distance within the province of Ontario .

geography

The river has its origin in the lake Lac Turgeon near La Sarre . From there it flows in a northerly direction and flows into the Rivière Harricana after about 200 km . The towns of Villebois and Valcanton are located on the upper reaches .

history

Before the arrival of the Europeans, the river region was inhabited by the Algonquin . The area was covered by forests until the 1930s. Then, during the economic crisis, many unemployed people migrated from Canadian cities to this region. At that time there were no roads or paths and the rivers were the main transport routes.

Three parishes were founded at that time: Saint-Joachim-de-Beaucanton, Saint-Camille-de-Villebois and Saint-Éphrem-de-Val-Paradis. Today Beaucanton and Val-Paradis have merged to form Valcanton. The settlements belong to the Baie-James municipality .

In the 1940s and 1950s several " Covered Bridges " were built in the valley of the river, the Vallée de la Turgeon . Five of them still exist: 3 over the Rivière Turgeon, 2 over its tributaries.
