Maurice Couture

Maurice Couture RSV (born November 3, 1926 in Saint-Pierre-de-Broughton , † January 19, 2018 in Québec ) was a Canadian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Québec .

Life

Maurice Couture joined the religious order of the Religieux de Saint Vincent de Paul and was ordained a priest on June 17, 1951 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Québec and titular bishop of Talaptula on July 17, 1982 . The Archbishop of Québec, Louis-Albert Vachon , donated him episcopal ordination on October 22 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops Lionel Audet and Jean-Paul Labrie from Québec.

He was appointed Bishop of Baie-Comeau on December 1, 1988, and was introduced to the office on January 13 of the next year. He was named Archbishop of Québec on March 17, 1990 and installed in office on May 1 of the same year.

On November 15, 2002, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

From 2002 to 2011 he was Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy Canada-Quebec of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . In 2003 he was awarded the Grand Officer's Cross of the Ordre national du Québec .
