Could've Been a pop - ballad that of the US songwriter was written Blaisch Lois. As interpreted by singer Tiffany , the song became a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1988 .

The title appeared on Tiffany's self-titled debut album in 1987 . The version that became a hit was recorded four years earlier.

Background information

Lois Blaisch wrote the song back in the early 1980s. She had met the "man of her dreams", who turned to another woman. Blaisch was depressed as a result, and one night when she could not sleep, her eyes fell on a bouquet of flowers that was wilting. She described this as the initial spark for the song Could've Been (Eng .: could have been ). She recorded a demo of the song.

Bradley Schmidt heard Blaisch sing the song while performing at Hungry Hunter in Thousand Oaks . He liked the piece and asked Blaisch for a demo to give to producer George Tobin. He invited Blaisch to a rehearsal in the recording studio, to which she only appeared with an acoustic guitar . Tobin was so fond of her music that Blaisch had to play the song three times. Tobin also recorded a version with piano accompaniment .

A little later he brought the then 13-year-old Tiffany into the studio, who had to sing the song true to the original. Tobin put a guitar solo over the recording and increased the tempo slightly . He liked the result so much that he offered Blaisch a recording contract, which she did not accept on the advice of her lawyer .

Tobin Blaisch bought the publishing rights and offered the version recorded by Tiffany to numerous singers, including Crystal Gayle , Dolly Parton and Natalie Cole , but none of them wanted to record the song. Meanwhile, Tiffany's career had started, and Tobin decided to include the piece on her debut album in the version that Tiffany had recorded when she was 13.
