Bénédict Turrettini

Bénédict Turrettini (born November 9, 1588 in Zurich , † March 4, 1631 in Geneva ) was a Reformed theologian from Geneva .

Life

Turrettini was a son of the merchant, silk merchant and patrician Francesco Turrettini (1547-1628) and Camilla Burlamacchi from Lucca . Like Giovanni Diodati's family , they were evangelical refugees; who had moved to Lyon , Antwerp , Emden , Bremen , Frankfurt and Basel from 1575 to 1579 . In 1591 the family moved from Bénédict's place of birth, Zurich, to Geneva, where many Italian refugees had already found refuge. In 1593, the father founded the Grande Boutique, the association of the silk industry in Geneva.

From 1602 to 1609 Turrettini studied theology in Geneva, Heidelberg , Franeker and Leiden . He was ordained pastor in Geneva in 1611 and began teaching at the Geneva Academy in the same year . In 1616 he married Louise Micheli, the daughter of the silk manufacturer Horace Micheli. From 1620 to 1621 he was pastor in Nîmes . In 1620 he was a member of the Compagnie des pasteurs at the French national synod in Alès . 1621 Envoy from the Geneva Council to the Netherlands. From 1620 to 1625 he was rector of the Geneva Academy. In November 1627 he was accepted into the Geneva city charter with his father Francesco and brother Jean; the father was even elected to the Council of 200, and he bequeathed great estates to his offspring.

Turrettini was the author of numerous writings, including Latin treatises and a manuscript entitled Histoire de la Réformation à Genève .

As the father of François Turrettini and the grandfather of Jean-Alphonse Turrettini , Bénédict Turrettini became the founder of a Geneva theological dynasty ( see also: Turrettini ).

Complete Works Turrettinis were two decrees of the Roman Catholic Congregation of 17 September 1647 on 10 May 1757 on the index set.
