Joseph Schumacher (theologian)

Joseph Schumacher (born March 4, 1934 in Nottuln near Münster in Westphalia ) is a Catholic theologian.

Life

After Schumacher had passed the Abitur at the State High School in Coesfeld in 1953, he studied philosophy and theology in Münster and Innsbruck from 1953 to 1959 . In 1959 he was ordained a priest in Münster. From 1959 to 1968 he worked as a chaplain in various parishes in the diocese of Münster and in 1968 as a high school teacher for religion in Oldenburg i. O.

Scientific career

From 1971, Joseph Schumacher was a research assistant at the Department of Fundamental Theology at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg im Breisgau until his doctorate. This took place in 1973 as a doctor of theology in Freiburg with the work Der Denzinger from its beginnings to the present. A contribution to the history of theological epistemology in recent times (published in print in 1974 with the title Der Denzinger. History and meaning of a book in the practice of modern theology published by Herder Verlag in Freiburg).

From 1974 he took up a scientific activity in the Episcopal Ordinariate in Münster. In 1977 Schumacher's habilitation took place in Freiburg with the work The Apostolic Conclusion of God's Revelation (published in print in 1979 with the same title by Herder Verlag in Freiburg). In 1977 he received the venia legendi for the subject of fundamental theology and began teaching as a private lecturer in 1978 .

Before taking up his professorship, he represented the chair for fundamental theology in Freiburg from 1980 to 1984 . In 1983 he was made an adjunct university professor.

In addition to teaching at the University of Freiburg since 1978, he has been giving extensive lectures at scientific congresses and academy conferences, which has been reflected in around eighty scientific papers. Schumacher mostly devotes himself to current issues, such as women's priesthood or intercommunion , as well as fundamental topics of the Catholic faith, such as the veneration of Mary and saints.

Schumacher has recently been active on the Internet with his own website and publishes many of his lectures and lectures there.
