Ambrosius Eßer

Ambrosius Eßer OP , also Ambrosius Eszer , (* as Klaus Eßer on November 19, 1932 in Düsseldorf , † April 12, 2010 in Berlin ) was a German religious and church historian .

Life

Eßer entered the novitiate of the Dominican Order in 1952 and was ordained a priest in 1959 . He was since 1964 member of the Historical Institute of the Dominicans in Rome and was at the Pontifical Gregorian University for Dr. scient. eccl. orient. PhD .

Since the 1970s he was in Rome as a professor of Eastern Church History at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas . He was committed to the Roman Institute of the Görres Society at Campo Santo Teutonico , of which he was director from 1972 to 1975.

Ambrosius Eßer has also worked for the Congregation for the Causes of Saints of the Roman Curia since 1983 , since 1990 its general relator ( Relator generalis Congregationis de Causis Sanctorum ). The general relator's task is to prepare the beatification and canonization processes and to evaluate the necessary process acts. He was succeeded in 2009 by Vincenzo Criscuolo OFMCap . Eßer has supervised important beatification proceedings, including those of Clemens August Graf von Galen , Sr. Maria Restituta , Ladislaus Batthyány-Strattmann , Emperor Karl I and Franz Jägerstätter .

In 1992 he was accepted into the Order of Malta as Honorary Conventual Chaplain of the Grand Priory of Austria .

He died of complications from a lung disease. His estate is in the archives of the Dominican Province of Teutonia.
