The Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity ( Latin : Pontificium Consilium ad Unitatem Christianorum Fovendam ; Italian : Pontificio consiglio per la promozione dell'unità dei cristiani ) was founded on June 5, 1960 by Pope John XXIII. Founded under the name of the Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity as a preparatory commission for the Second Vatican Council .

During the council, the secretariat played a decisive role in the creation of the council documents

After the end of the council, Paul VI confirmed the Secretariat as a permanent institution of the Apostolic See .

Through the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus of June 28, 1988, the Secretariat was given its current name.

According to the Decree Unitatis Redintegratio , it is the task of the Council to “promote dialogue and cooperation with other churches and world Christian communities”.

Until the official dialogue with the Orthodox churches was resumed by the Pontifical Council in 2004, the unofficial dialogue took place via the Vienna Pro Oriente Foundation .

The Commission for Religious Relations with Judaism is assigned to her .
