Zbigņevs Stankevičs (born February 15, 1955 in Lejasciems , Latvian SSR ) is Archbishop of Riga .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1973, Zbigņevs Stankevičs began studying engineering at the Polytechnic Institute in Riga. He graduated in 1978 as a specialist in automatic control systems and worked in a shipyard until 1990.

In the same year he began studying theology at the Theological Faculty of the Catholic University of Lublin . On June 16, 1996 he was ordained a priest by Jānis Pujats , Archbishop of Riga . From 1996 to 2001 he worked as a parish vicar in pastoral care and spiritual at the seminary of the Archdiocese of Riga. In 2001 he was appointed cathedral vicar at St. Jacob's Cathedral in Riga. Sent to Rome by his archbishop, he studied fundamental theology at the Pontifical Lateran University , where he initially obtained a licentiate and in 2008 received his doctorate with a dissertation on Bernhard Welte . Returned to Latvia, he became rector of the seminary of the Archdiocese of Riga, where he also taught as a professor. In 2009 he also took over the management of the Institute of Religious Studies in Riga.

On June 19, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Zbigņevs Stankevičs as Archbishop of Riga. On August 8, 2010, he was ordained bishop by his predecessor Jānis Pujats in St. Jacob's Cathedral in Riga. Co- consecrators were Józef Kowalczyk , Archbishop of Gniezno , and Luigi Bonazzi , Titular Archbishop of Atella and Apostolic Nuncio in Lithuania , Estonia and Latvia .

As Archbishop of Riga, Zbigņevs Stankevičs is also metropolitan of the three other Latvian dioceses of Liepāja , Rēzekne-Aglona and Jelgava .

The coat of arms shows a golden dove on a red background, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, who descends over the " Terra Mariana " ("Marienland" - a name often used in the Middle Ages of the Baltic states). Below the wavy line on a sand-colored background in red, the letters T and M = Terra Mariana and in the golden circle the Christ monogram XP - Chi-Rho .

Meaning of the colors: gold = the divine, divinity; Red = fire of the Holy Spirit, martyrdom, purification; Sand = Latvian soil, sea and sand.

Behind the shield is the patriarchal cross, above it the green galero (bishop's hat ) with the ten green tassels (fiocchi) hanging down . Under the shield the pallium of the metropolitan .

His motto is: Fortitudo et laus mea Dominus - (My strength and my hymn of praise is the Lord) ( Ex 15.2  EU ).
