The in Latvia located diocese Rezekne-Aglona ( lat. : Dioecesis Rezeknensis-Aglonensis , Latvian Rēzeknes-Aglonas diecēze ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Rezekne . It was founded in 1995 with the bull Ad aptius consulendum by John Paul II . As a suffragan, it is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Riga , which was also the founding diocese . Its territory corresponds to the Latvian region of Latgale . The main parish church of the city, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus , was elevated to the cathedral ( Rēzeknes Jēzus Sirds katedrāle ) . The first bishop of the diocese has been the former bishop of Liepāja , Jānis Bulis , since 1995 .
With almost a third Catholics, the Rēzekne-Aglona diocese has the second highest proportion of Catholics in Latvia (after the Jelgava diocese ). The most important and most visited place of pilgrimage in Latvia, the Basilica of the Assumption in Aglona, is located in the diocese .
