Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rēzekne

The Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rēzekne , Eastern Latvia, is the episcopal church of the Catholic diocese of Rēzekne-Aglona . The church was elevated to a cathedral with the establishment of the diocese in 1995 .

Originally there was a wooden church from 1685 on the site of today's church. After it burned down during a thunderstorm in 1887, today's church was built in the neo-Romanesque style. The Riga engineer Florians Viganovskis was responsible for the church, which was completed in 1902 and consecrated in 1904. The consecration took place after the interior work was completed in 1914. To this day it is one of the largest churches in Latvia.

Particularly worth seeing are the carved, neo-Gothic wooden altars, which are decorated with figures of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, St. Theresa and other saints. The stained glass showing the first bishops of Latvia: St. Meinhard and St. Albert are also important . The most recent renovation mainly concerned repair work on the leaky roof.
