Richard Baawobr
Richard Kuuia Baawobr MAfr (born June 21, 1959 in Nandom, Lawra District , Ghana ) is a Ghanaian religious , former Superior General of the White Fathers and Roman Catholic Bishop of Wa .
Life
Richard Baawobr joined in 1979 the Congregation of the Society of Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) at and studied philosophy at Saint Victor's Seminary in Tamale . After his novitiate in Freiburg, Switzerland, from 1981 to 1982, he studied theology at the Mission Institute of the Order in Totteridge near London . On December 5, 1986, he took the oath of mission and on July 18, 1987, he was ordained a priest in Ko ( Diocese of Wa ) in Ghana. After working as a missionary in Livulu in the Archdiocese of Kinshasa in Congo , he studied Biblical Exegesis in Rome from 1991 and completed training in Ignatian spirituality in Le Châtelard near Lyon , a training center for the Jesuits . From 1996 to 1999 Richard Baawobr was the novice master of the novitiate in Kahangala , Tanzania . In 1999 he became head of training at the religious seminary in Toulouse . In 2004 he received his doctorate in biblical studies . He was a delegate of the French Order Province in the General Chapter of 2004 and was elected General Assistant to the Order.
The general chapter of the “Society of Missionaries of Africa” elected Richard Baawobr on May 31, 2010 in Rome in the third ballot (with a two-thirds majority) as the new Superior General to succeed Gérard Chabanon . Baawobr is the first African in this office.
From 2010 to 2016 he was Chancellor of the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI) in Rome.
On February 17, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Wa . He was ordained episcopal on May 7th of the same year by the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace Archbishop Peter Kodwo Appiah Cardinal Turkson ; Co- consecrators were Philip Naameh , Archbishop of Tamale , and Archbishop Jean-Marie Speich , Apostolic Nuncio in Ghana.
On July 4, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity .
