Viewpoints
homosexuality
Cardinal Turkson said after UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon criticized the planned statutory death penalty for homosexuality in some black African countries that the sanctions for homosexuals were partly an exaggeration, but the clarity of the reaction was consistent with tradition. There is a difference between morality and human rights. In a television interview for CNN , Turkson put forward the thesis that the traditional tabooing of homosexuality in African cultures had to some extent protected the population from tendencies towards child abuse and saved the Church in Africa from an abuse scandal of European dimensions.
Church and Power
In an interview, he said that, in his experience, the basis of the Church's “power” is the “following of the simple and poor” whom the Church has to serve. “ Noi siamo pastori e non facciamo politica ” (German: “We are pastors and do not do politics”), he said in an interview with the Vatican daily L'Osservatore Romano ; people should learn to distinguish between pastoral care and politics. One of the main tasks of the church is to spread knowledge of the social encyclical Caritas in veritate in society.
environmental Protection
Peter Cardinal Turkson is committed to the preservation of the natural foundations of life. He criticizes, for example, the environmentally harmful methods of exploiting natural resources in Ghana by multinational corporations, regardless of the consequences for the living conditions of the people affected. In particular, African farmers are threatened by the permanent pollution of the soil with environmental toxins. Environmental protection in Africa is also in the self-interest of the north, as climatic changes affect the world and the deterioration in living conditions in Africa would increase the pressure to migrate to Europe and America.
