Nsuta Wassa , Nsuta for short , also Nsuta-Wassa , Nsuta Wassaw , Nsuta-Wassaw , Wassa Nsuta and Wassaw Nsuta , is a place in the Wassa West District of the Ghanaian western region . The place is about three kilometers south of the city of Tarkwa .

In 1914, a manganese mine was discovered near Nsuta , and the African Manganese Co. began mining the ore two years later . Until the 1950s, the manganese from Nsuta was the main source of batteries . Between the start of production and 1981, over 25 million tons of manganese were extracted from the mine, but production has been falling since the 1960s. Today the mine is owned by the Ghana Manganese Company .

On October 11, 1948, after Peter Poreku Dery, the second Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson was born in Nsuta Wassa.
