Tarkwa

Tarkwa is a place in the Western Region in the West African state of Ghana and the capital of the Wassa West District .

At the last census of the country on March 26, 2000, there were 30,631 inhabitants in the city. Projections for January 1, 2007 estimate the population to be 34,544. In the 1984 census, 22,107 inhabitants were listed and in 1970 the population was only 4,702. The city is currently at the 41st position on the list of the largest cities in Ghana.

The town's original population is ethnically composed of members of the Wassa people . However, the influx of labor due to mining has created considerable ethnic differentiation.

economy

Gold has been mined in Tarkwa for 100 years. The area has the highest concentration of mines in one district in all of Africa. 25% of Ghana's gold production comes from Tarkwa. Gold mining also has a significant negative impact on the environment around the city.

Tarkwa is also an important railway junction on the route from Takoradi to Kumasi .
