The Global class consists of two cruise ships that are built by MV Werften Rostock and MV Werften Wismar . They are intended for the Asian market, where the parent company of MV Werften , the Genting Group , operates Dream Cruises . The delivery of the first ship, the Global Dream , was planned for 2021. The second, currently (December 2019) unnamed unit should be delivered in 2022. In terms of the number of passengers, the two units will then be the largest cruise ships in the world, each with a capacity of 9500 passengers.

history

The Global Class ships were ordered in May 2016 and were initially to be built at Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven , which Genting took over in 2015/2016. The delivery of the ships initially intended for Star Cruises was planned for 2019 and 2020. However, after Genting had also taken over the Nordic Yards shipyards in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, it was decided that the ships should be built there instead.

The construction of the first ship, the Global Dream , began on March 8, 2018 with the first steel cut in Wismar and Warnemünde. Delivery was now planned for the end of 2020, which was later postponed again to 2021. The Global Dream was launched in September 2018 in the shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde. In November 2019, the 200 meter long central section, which had been built by then, was towed from Warnemünde to Wismar, where the ship is to be completed.

The construction of the second ship began on September 10, 2019 in Warnemünde. It was laid on December 9, 2019 at the shipyard in Warnemünde and is to be delivered in 2022.

In January 2020, the bow and stern of the Global Dream were mounted on the middle section in the Wismar assembly hall. Due to the corona crisis, production was initially stopped in March 2020.

In the course of the corona pandemic, work on both ships was temporarily suspended in March 2020. The work should not resume until the end of the year at the earliest. The work on the Global Dream was about three quarters complete at this point. The second ship under construction in Rostock-Warnemünde was still in the early stages.

drive

The ships will each be equipped with six MAN 4-stroke engines of the type 48 / 60CR with a total output of 96,000 kW. Construction began on March 8, 2018 with the first steel cut in Wismar and Warnemünde, and they too should get under way for Dream Cruises . The first ship was laid down on September 11, 2018 in Warnemünde as the BN 125 .

The Federal Republic of Germany is supporting the construction of the two ships with an export guarantee of 2.6 billion euros.
