The Norwegian Dawn is a cruise ship built at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg ( hull number  649).

prehistory

This ship was the second ship that had been delivered to Meyer Werft GmbH in 1998 as part of a two-ship order from the Star Cruises shipping company . The name originally intended for this ship was Superstar Scorpio . With the takeover of Norwegian Cruise Line by Star Cruises in February 2000, NCL became the client before the ship was delivered.

Which is registered Norwegian Dawn in Nassau on the Bahamas . The construction costs for the ship were given at around 400 million euros . The Ems overpass took place on the night of November 2nd to 3rd, 2002. The ship was delivered to the shipping company by Meyer-Werft on December 4, 2002; the official christening took place on December 16, 2002. Godmother was the actress Kim Cattrall , known from the US TV series Sex and the City .

Data

Around 2,000 kilometers of cables and 200 kilometers of pipes were laid during construction, and 220 tons of paint were required for the painting. There are 13 restaurants, nine bars and a theater with a capacity of 1,037 people on board. This theater is equipped with a revolving stage and nine stage lifts. The water treatment system on board is able to treat up to 2.7 million liters of drinking water every day. There are four biological sewage treatment plants on the ship. The ship is fully air-conditioned.

safety

The Norwegian Dawn is divided into seven fire Onen and according to the latest IMO equipped rules. In the event of a necessary evacuation, there are six tenders, 14 lifeboats, two fast lifeboats and six so-called "marine evacuation" systems on board.

operation area

In winter, Norwegian Dawn sails from Tampa to the Caribbean, in summer from New York or Boston to Bermuda and New England / Canada.

Incidents

An incident attracted media attention on April 16, 2005, when the Norwegian Dawn was hit by three successive waves (known as the " Three Sisters ") on the way back from the Bahamas to New York on the Georgia coast . The third wave, which eyewitness reports said was 70 feet (21 meters) high, wreaked havoc on the 9th and 10th upper decks. It smashed windows, tore whirlpools overboard and flooded 62 cabins. Four passengers suffered minor injuries. The shipping company later assured that the incident never endangered safety on board.

On November 27, 2009, Norwegian Dawn had to interrupt the return trip to Miami due to propulsion problems. After almost six hours of lack of electrical energy and propulsion power, the ship was finally able to call at Puerto Rico at a greatly reduced speed . From there all passengers were flown back to Miami.

On May 19, 2015, Norwegian Dawn ran aground off the British Bermuda Islands due to propulsion problems. After 4.5 hours the ship could be freed from the reef. Subsequent examinations by divers found that the hull was not damaged.
