The Norwegian Jewel is a cruise ship operated by the Norwegian Cruise Line . She corresponds to the Panamax category and is the type ship of the “Jewel” class. The ship was built at the Meyer Werft in Papenburg (Germany) and transferred to Eemshaven in the Netherlands on June 25, 2005 via the Ems .
After commissioning in August 2005, Norwegian Jewel was christened on November 3, 2005 in the port of Miami . Godmother was Melania Trump , wife of Donald Trump .
Machine system and drive
The Norwegian Jewel is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system. Five V-12-cylinder diesel engines of the type MAN B&W 48 / 60B drive generators that supply the ship with electrical energy. The fuel consumption of the engines at cruising speed is approx. 220 liters / minute. When the tanks are full, the fuel supply is sufficient for approx. 10 days. The ship's propulsion system consists of two ABB - "Azipod" - propeller pods built into the stern , which can be rotated 360 °. The output of the electric propeller motors is 19.5 MW each. For maneuvering in ports and at low speeds, a triple transverse thruster control system with a total output of 12.6 MW is installed in the bow . The ship has five air conditioning machines with a total output of 22.5 MW for air conditioning and cooling.
Cabins and on-board facilities
There are 1,188 cabins on twelve passenger decks, 763 of which are balcony cabins and 27 are wheelchair-accessible cabins that can accommodate up to 2,376 passengers. The specialty of the ship are the very spacious suites and villas, which are among the largest of their kind at sea. The two villas in the Garden Villa category offer extensive comfort, including butler service , on an area of 408 m² each . The publicly accessible areas include:

- Stardust Theater (extends over three decks and has 1,042 seats)

In winter, the Norwegian Jewel sails in Australian and Southeast Asian waters, home ports are Sydney and Tokyo. In the summer, the ship sails from Vancouver or Seward to Alaska.
Trivia
- At the same time as the Norwegian Jewel was transferred to the Ems on June 25, 2005, the new container ship in Barmbek was transferred.
- Approx. 930 m³ of drinking water is consumed on board every day and about 2,800 m³ of fresh water is produced.
- There are two incineration plants for garbage disposal .
- Nine washing machines with a capacity of up to 115 kg and nine tumble dryers are in use in the laundry.
- The two anchors weigh twelve tons each, the anchor chains are approx. 350 m long.
- A total of 6,800 sprinkler nozzles , 437 fire extinguishers (40 of them in the engine room) and seven fire stations provide fire protection.
- During the construction period, 1,300 km of cables and 105 km of pipes were laid.
- Around 25,000 different types of light sources are installed on the ship .
- There are 835 exterior windows and 1,834 interior doors on board.
- A total of 18,100 liters of paint were used for the painting, 4,500 liters of which were for the outer shell and 13,600 liters for the interior.
- The maximum capacity of all lifeboats and life rafts is 5,020 people.
- Episode 10 of the third season of the TV series Transparent_ (TV series) was filmed on Norwegian Jewel.
