The Breakaway class is a class of ships that was commissioned by Norwegian Cruise Line at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg .

history

The first two ships were ordered in October 2010. Construction of the type ship began on September 21, 2011. The Norwegian Breakaway was delivered in April 2013. The Norwegian Getaway was delivered in January 2014.

In October 2012 the shipping company ordered two more newbuildings. However, they are measured by another deck with around 163,000 GT and are therefore somewhat larger than the two previous ships. This would make them the largest ships in the fleet and, after the Quantum class and Oasis class from Royal Caribbean International, the largest passenger ships in the world. For this reason, these ships are also grouped together as the Breakaway Plus class. The delivery of the first ship was agreed for October 2015, the second ship for the beginning of 2017.

The ships in the Breakaway Plus class are equipped with an exhaust gas cleaning system, each consisting of 5 scrubbers . These are (as of mid-2013) the world's largest exhaust filter system on a ship.

In March 2015 Norwegian Cruise Line signed a contract with Silverstream Technologies for the delivery of an Air Lubrication System to be installed on Norwegian Joy . In addition, two options were agreed according to which the new buildings planned for 2018 and 2019 should also be equipped with this system.

On March 20, 2014, the construction of the Norwegian Escape began with the first steel cut . The Norwegian Escape was laid down on September 19, 2014. The first section was undocked on December 5, 2014.

In July 2014, NCL ordered two more ships in the Breakaway Plus class from the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg. These should be delivered in 2018 and 2019.

On September 16, 2015, the construction of the Norwegian Bliss , the later Norwegian Joy, began with the first steel cut.

Construction of Norwegian Bliss with hull number S. 707 began on October 28, 2016.

On January 31, 2018, construction of the last ship began, the Norwegian Encore with hull number S. 708. An engine room section was built at the Neptun shipyard and transferred to Papenburg in August 2018. As part of Meyer Werft's construction strategy , a 140-meter-long megablock was undocked on November 23, 2018. The keel laying ceremony took place on November 28, 2018. After undocking on August 17, 2019, the ship was on September 30/1. October 2019 transferred from Papenburg to Eemshaven . It was delivered on October 31, 2019.
