Nicolas Ghesquière (* 1971 in Comines , Nord-Pas-de-Calais , France ) is a French fashion designer .

Life

While still at school in Loudun , Ghesquière did a summer internship in 1986 at the Parisian fashion company agnès b. He did another internship at the Paris luggage manufacturer Corinne Cobson . Ghesquière never completed any training in fashion. From 1990 to 1992 he was Jean-Paul Gaultier's assistant in Paris. He then worked as a freelance designer at the Paris knitwear manufacturer Pôles , designed the second line at Thierry Mugler and was under contract with the shoe manufacturer Stephane Kelian .

Jacques Bogart SA , then owner of the fashion brand Balenciaga , hired Ghesquiére in 1995 as a designer for the Balenciaga license in Japan . Ghesquière also worked as a designer for Trussardi in the late 1990s. When the then Balenciaga chief designer, Josephus Thimister, was dismissed by Bogart in 1997 and the company was unable to hire the preferred candidate Helmut Lang as creative director, the choice fell on Ghesquière. Ghesquiére helped the Balenciaga brand to regain its shine with modern interpretations of Cristóbal Balenciaga's original designs. In November 2012, Ghesquière left Balenciaga after 15 years as chief designer. François-Henri Pinault , owner of the then PPR group (since 2013: Kering ), to which Balenciaga has belonged since 2004, praised Ghesquières at the end of 2012 for “incomparable creative talent” and praised his artistic work as “decisive for the unique direction of the house” Balenciaga .

In November 2013, Ghesquière was appointed to succeed Marc Jacobs as artistic director of the women's collection at Louis Vuitton . At the end of 2013, the parent company LVMH described Ghesquière as "one of the greatest talents of the time".
