Dries Van Noten
Dries Van Noten (born May 12, 1958 in Antwerp ) is a Belgian fashion designer . The fashion company he founded in 1986 bears his name.
Life
Van Noten was born into a family of tailors ; his father was a gentlemen's outfitter , his grandfather a tailor. He grew up with a brother and two sisters. His father ran a men's boutique in Antwerp and hoped that his son would take over the boutique instead of studying. At the request of his parents, he attended a Jesuit school, from which he was expelled because, according to his own statement, "he did not fit into the concept of education that the Jesuits had." From 1976 Dries Van Noten studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts ( Flemish : Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten ) in Antwerp, where he graduated in 1980. After working as a freelancer for other companies, he and five other Belgian colleagues (“ Antwerp Six ”) successfully presented his first men's collection in London in 1986 under his own name. Women's fashion followed a year later.
Four collections appear annually under the Dries Van Noten brand for women (70 percent of sales) and men, each for spring / summer and autumn / winter. From 1996 there was a highly acclaimed children's collection for a while , but it had to be discontinued in favor of men's fashion. In addition to the high-priced main line, there is deliberately no cheaper second line. The collections have been presented at the Paris fashion shows since 1993 . Very characteristic of Van Noten's creations is the use of, often ethnic- folklore , prints, colors and layering. Van Noten attaches great importance to fabrics and materials, some of which are specially made for him. He has a huge fan base , though he virtually no advertising operates.
Dries Van Noten works in Antwerp. He owns several shops of his own , the first, "Het Modepaleis", opened in Antwerp in 1989. This was followed by showrooms and, in some cases, partner-run boutiques in Hong Kong (1997), Paris (2007), Tokyo (2009), Kuwait (2011), Osaka (2015) and Singapore, as well as smaller shops-in-shops in larger fashion stores, so-called corners , in other cities. Worldwide there are around 500 retail stores among its customers. The company's headquarters are on Willemsdok in the port of Antwerp , not far from the Museum aan de Stroom . The company's turnover in 2011 was an estimated 50 million euros. Dries Van Noten fashion is in the upper price segment. In 2017 the documentary Dries was released, in which Van Noten himself appears.
Van Noten's company was completely self-financed and therefore independent until 2018. In mid-2018, Van Noten sold the majority of its company to the family-run Spanish perfume and fashion group Puig, which includes the fashion and perfume companies Jean Paul Gaultier , Nina Ricci , Carolina Herrera and Paco Rabanne as well as the perfume licenses of Prada , Valentino and Comme des Garçons belong. Van Noten himself remained creative director, CEO and minority shareholder.
In May 2020, a group of designers under Van Noten's aegis wrote an open letter to the fashion industry in response to the COVID-19 pandemic , calling for the industry to slow down radically. Numerous well-known designers, fashion houses and retailers joined the call.
Private
Dries Van Noten lives with his partner Patrick Vangheluwe, who has been with the company since it was founded, in a country house in Lier . In mid-2017, Van Noten was awarded the title of Baron by King Philippe in recognition of his services to the Belgian fashion industry .
